Hershey in Ligonier

The Ligonier Diamond was recently shut down for a couple of days to serve as the backdrop for the filming of Hershey—a new movie about the life and legacy of Milton Hershey. The film will chronicle the rise of the Hershey candy empire and the extraordinary generosity that followed. In 1909, Milton and Kitty Hershey founded the Hershey Industrial School, providing free education and housing to orphans and underprivileged children.

Roughly 20 years before his death in 1945, Milton Hershey placed the majority of his fortune into a trust for the school, creating what would become one of the largest educational endowments in the country. The Hersheys’ legacy extended far beyond chocolate—they also invested in their workers by building theaters, recreation centers, and public transportation. I was able to sneak down one day to get a peek during filming.
